Henrietta Charteris

Henrietta Charteris is a Scottish-born contemporary figurative painter, specialising in oil.

She has lived in California, France, Singapore and the UK, all of which have influenced her work.

Following a degree in French, Henrietta trained in Fine Art and painting at Newcastle College of Art, The Heatherley Art School, Chelsea, and London Fine Art Studios. She held a debut solo show in London in 2008 which was a sell out, and has gone on to exhibit in London, Singapore, Hampshire, East Anglia and Scotland, She has twice been selected for the New English Art Club Annual Open Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London.

Henrietta paints with freedom and energy, predominantly ‘en plein air’, but also in the studio, where she builds on these landscapes to produce more dream-like scenes that often feature figures and objects such as a lone canoe on a lake, or family members from camping trips in North America where she lived as a child. Whilst the notion of landscape underpins most of her work, these studio-based paintings explore the nature of memory and the imagination, and she hopes the viewer will be able to project their own stories onto the canvas. Influences include Peter Doig, Milton Avery, Richard Diebenkorn and Paula Modersohn-Becker.

Painting for Henrietta is a powerful vehicle for creative and emotional expression. She hopes you will enjoy her work and maybe find something on her site that you would like to live with..
